Journey’s Jonathan Cain has a blunt message for Bruce Springsteen

Patriotic keyboardist Jonathan Cain of the band Journey ripped leftist rockstar Bruce Springsteen for being an “annoying, bitter old man.”

Appearing on the “Complete Disaster Network” podcast in mid-May, Cain said Springsteen, who loves running his mouth about President Donald Trump and his supporters, should “shut up.”

“I used to be a Democrat back in the old days, but I couldn’t go there anymore, you know?” Cain said. “I’m a diehard conservative [now].”

“And guys like Bruce Springsteen should shut up — you know, really, honestly, shut up. Him and who’s the other one? Robert DeNiro. I mean, who cares, guys? Do your art. I try to keep politics out of my music,” he added (12:22).

Cain, who’s married to evangelist Paula White-Cain, then defended himself from those who take offense to his Christian conservatism.

“Now, people say, ‘Well, you’re a Christian and you’re conservative,’ and I’m like, ‘So what?’ I don’t preach it on stage. I don’t spend 10 minutes talking about it,” he noted.

“And Bruce, I mean, what the heck? I used to like him, and now he’s just annoying. He’s an annoying, bitter old man. I mean, stop it. Really. You were born in the USA, weren’t you, dude? So act like it. But even that song, if you look at the lyrics, I mean, it’s a kind of a diss toward our country,” he added.

However, in fairness to his critics, it does appear that Cain has injected at least a little bit of his politics into his latest solo single, “Winds of Freedom.”

“I’m releasing this patriotic song because I’m a diehard patriot like Ted Nugent, who’s my friend,” he admitted. “We’re a couple of patriots,… we love our flag and we love our nation, and we grew up that way.”

Regarding patriots, Cain also had nice words to say about Kid Rock.

“Me and Kid Rock, we’re probably on an island,” he said. “There’s a few of us, and I proudly stand there with my flag on that island. And if anybody’s got a problem with me, America and Jesus, then bring it.”

Speaking of being an American, Springsteen — a guy who gets off on hating everything about America — bizarrely alleged in 2019 that President Trump doesn’t grasp “what it means to be an American.”

“It’s just frightening, you know?” he said while speaking about Trump’s presidency with “CBS This Morning” host Gayle King. “We’re living in a frightening time. The stewardship of the nation has been thrown away to somebody who doesn’t have a clue as to what that means.”

“And unfortunately, we have somebody who I feel doesn’t have a grasp of the deep meaning of what it means to be an American,” he added.

He’s since repeated this same refrain on several occasions:

Critics at the time accused him of acting like an elitist snob.

“The fact is that Bruce Springsteen has been posturing as the poet laureate of New Jersey’s working classes for the last thirty years with little knowledge of work, less understanding of class, and, most shockingly, no feel at all for the people of New Jersey,” author and journalist Jack Cashill opined in an op-ed way back in 2007.

Springsteen also had a record of being inconsistent. Despite being against wars and in fact protesting against former President George W. Bush’s war efforts in Iraq (Trump also protested those efforts), he changed his tune the moment then-President Barack Obama stepped into office in 2009.

Then all of a sudden, his protests quieted down as Obama proceeded in 2013 to seek approval for pursuing military action in Syria. Then six years later, when Trump reversed the Obama administration’s initiative by finally ordering the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the beleaguered nation, again he remained dead quiet.

Critics say the real patriots are in Journey, who reportedly became one of the first bands to perform during the COVID pandemic.

“Everybody told us we were gonna fail, and we were crazy — we’re all gonna die, you know?” Cain recalled. “And we said, ‘Nonsense, it’s time to go back out and celebrate rock ‘n’ roll again,’ and we were right, and we filled every arena we played.”
