Matt Gaetz moves to cut funding for massive new FBI headquarters complex

Citing “malfeasance” at the FBI’s Washington Field Office, U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., announced an effort to halt spending on a new headquarters for the bureau.

The measure, “FBI Washington Field Office House Arrest Act,” calls for the House to halt all spending allocated towards the FBI’s new proposed headquarters outside the District of Columbia, according to a press release — the Pelosi-led House vote to allocate $375 million for a new facility, as part of the massive December 2022 Omnibus Bill.

“There are still good men and women in the FBI whose task and purpose are to defend our country, but the FBI’s weaponized Washington Field Office is rotten to the core,” Gaetz said in a statement.

“Through our investigations in the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, we have uncovered extremely disturbing testimony from FBI whistleblowers that the Washington Field Office is targeting Americans who oppose their corrupt political agenda,” the GOP lawmaker continued. “The cancer at the Washington Field Office has metastasized so large that the entire body is in critical condition.

“Gifting the FBI a new headquarters larger than the Pentagon would condone, reinforce, and enable their nefarious behavior to levels we have never seen before.”

The “FBI Washington Field Office House Arrest Act” will be co-sponsored by Republican U.S. Reps. Andy Biggs (Ariz.), Rep. Dan Bishop (N.C.), Rep. Paul Gosar (Ariz.), Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.), and Rep. Harriet Hageman (Wyo.)

While one need look no further than former President Donald Trump and the Russian collusion hoax to get a picture of the “nefarious behavior” of the FBI, Gaetz himself was a target of the bureau.

In December 2020, the FBI seized the congressman’s cellphone as it launched an investigation into what role Gaetz may have played in the alleged sex trafficking of a 17-year-old girl. The probe was allowed to linger for two long years through the 2022 election before Gaetz was informed last month that there would be no charges filed.

Gaetz celebrated the news while speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference and called for abolishing the FBI if necessary.

“If you don’t mind me saying so, I think vindication looks pretty good on me!” he told a cheering crowd.

“I don’t care if it takes every second of our time and every ounce of our energy, we either get this government back on our side or we defund, get rid of, abolish the FBI CDC, ATF,” he would add later.
