Fox News’ Janice Dean racks up big support to unseat Andrew Cuomo as New York governor

New York Republicans are reportedly touting Fox News meteorologist Janice Dean, who is Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s critic in chief, as a potential candidate for governor in 2o22.

Dean has been holding the New York Democrat’s feet to the fire for his catastrophic decision to send thousands of COVID-positive patients to nursing homes. This edict is believed to have spiked thousands of coronavirus deaths in those facilities. Dean tragically lost both of her in-laws, who lived in eldercare housing, to the infection.

On television and on social media, Dean, 50, has been engaged in a war of words with Cuomo and his team over the handling or mishandling of the pandemic in contrast to the generally inexplicable fawning coverage that most news outlets have afforded the often-arrogant governor. And the GOP has apparently noticed.

Dean has called for an independent investigation of nursing home fatalities as well as challenging the grandstanding governor to participate in a town hall event with those who lost loved ones to the virus.

Last week, the usually apolitical weather woman, who has “become a single-issue tornado,” participated in a Zoom call with GOP activists, during which she reportedly hurled “anti-Cuomo red meat before a hungry audience,” according to the New York Post.

Nick Langworthy, New York’s Republican chairman, is on board with a possible Dean candidacy. “Someone like Janice Dean would be an absolute nightmare for Andrew Cuomo. She’s intelligent, accomplished, has a national profile and she’s fearless. We will be conducting a widespread search to select the best candidate to take him on and Janice would unquestionably be a welcome addition,” he claimed.

Dean already has the endorsement of close friend and former colleague Megyn Kelly. “Unlike the poser currently in the governor’s mansion, she really IS ‘New York tough,’ whip smart, and we can trust her. She’s got my vote,” the ex-Kelly File host said. She also shared the hashtag #runjanicerun.

Earlier, in response to attacks on her friend’s credibility, Kelly declared that Dean “is an expert on how Cuomo’s orders killed [6,000-plus people], including her in-laws. She had to become one. B/c the media didn’t give a damn.”

In a statement, Dean was noncommittal about any political aspirations, but didn’t entirely close the door on the possible run for office. “I was beyond flattered and a bit surprised when Chairman Langworthy brought up a possible run for Governor someday. While I am not afraid of Mr. Cuomo and would love the chance to challenge his deadly policies that helped kill thousands of seniors, for now I am grateful for my job at FOX News as their senior meteorologist.”

To unseat Cuomo, or to compete with another Democrat if Cuomo doesn’t seek reelection, is a formidable challenge for a Republican in the blue state. A viable GOP candidate would need name recognition, charisma, high energy, significant campaign cash, the ability to win votes across party lines, and lots of luck.
