Dem Senator calls to punch Trump ‘in the face,’ then demands end to ‘hateful rhetoric’

A Democratic senator from Montana has a strong view of what beating President Donald Trump in 2020 should look like for his party.

Sen. Jon Tester urged Democrats looking to beat Trump in the 2020 race to “punch him in the face” in an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Thursday.

The lawmaker tweeted a portion of his interview with Joe Scarborough, declaring that “we should be able to disagree on policy without this hateful rhetoric.” But on the air, he had no problem delivering some “hateful’ and violent rhetoric of his own.

“Let me ask you, how much did Donald Trump win your state by?” Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough asked the Democrat who won reelection in 2018 in the state where Trump repeatedly campaigned for Republican challenger, Montana State Auditor Matt Rosendale.

“I think he won by 21 points,” Tester responded.

“So he won by 21 points. You spoke out, you had no problem speaking out against racism in Charlottesville,” Scarborough said. “You’ve had no problem speaking out against his racist comments, even when supporting him on issues when you agree with those issues and you got reelected.”

“Please, tell other Democrats how to do that going into 2020,” Scarborough said.

“Well, I think you don’t take the bait that President Trump came out here,” Tester replied. “You say that what he has done is absolutely disgraceful for the country and call it for what it is, which is racism. And then you talk about things like high costs of health care, high costs of higher education. What you’re going to do on the southern border to help stop the situations down there.”

These issues, Tester contended, are what “will move the folks who will get you elected.”

“I don’t think, even in states where Donald Trump won big, that it does you any good running away from Donald Trump,” he said. “I think you need to go back and punch him in the face. I mean the truth is, this guy is bad for this country.”

Tester called for an end to the “hateful rhetoric” in a tweet with his interview. But the Montana Democrat seemed to have conveniently left off the portion of the clip where he calls for the president of the United States to be punched in the face.

“The radical left is out of actual ways to beat Donald Trump and is turning now to violence? Really?” Gregg Jarrett said on Fox Business’ “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” reacting to the clip of Tester’s response.

“Punch him in the face. The president of the United States, yes, punch him in the face,” Jarrett said after playing the video of the senator. “Classy guy. And of course host Joe Scarborough completely ignored the comment.”

Tester was slammed on Twitter for his hypocrisy.
